Nature is what my soul craves. Whether it be wildlife or just a pretty landscape, it makes me happy. My purpose in capturing these images is to share them with others that may not realize what they are missing. Life gets in the way for all of us and we need to make it a priority to take time to look, listen and appreciate the beauty around us. Your soul craves this also. Maybe you just don’t realize it yet.

Hi Dawn, Great pic. However, this is an immature Black-chinned, not a Broad-tailed. Note the absence of rufous within any of the tail feathers, the very modest cinnamon wash along the sides, and the blackish cheek, all typical of a fresh Black-chinned. The club-shaped outermost primary (R10) makes it a Black-chinned rather than a Ruby-throated. Another feature of the Archilochus genus is how much smaller R5 is than R7, as the inner primaries are notably narrower than the outer ones. Given the relatively short, straight bill, blackish cheek, and slightly pointed central tail feathers, it is likely a young male. regards, Jim Pike/CA
Dawn Key replied:
Hi Jim, Thank you for the informative correction. I did not know there had ever been any Black Chinned hummingbirds out here. I’m excited to know they’re here! I have some studying to do! Dawn
